Why Did I Decide to Create an Organization?

Sometimes the solution to our problem comes by way of a stranger.  Sometimes we miss the opportunity to sincerely thank him or her for their help.  Maybe the best way to show our gratitude is to engage in kind and generous actions to help others.  This type of thinking is what motivated me to create a non-profit organization, Educational Synergy to Brighter Futures (eSyngery).  eSynergy is not merely an organization, it’s devotion; a devotion of giving back without the expectation of getting anything in return…except positive results.  The purpose for creating this organization is to connect with people from all around the world with the sole purpose of helping the youth of the United States and Africa with a showing of generosity and kindness. The goal of the organization is to assist school-aged youth in the United States and African in all possible ways to help them pursue a better life through education.  The concept to create this organization was inspired by my own journey – from the jungles of Africa to America.

I am originally from the Republic of Congo.  My life became completely torn apart when my country was battered by a series of brutal civil wars.  These wars lasted from 1993 to 2001. During that time, I could not regularly go to school due to the ever-present threat of violence.  Life for me was simply a life of survival.  I had to step over dead bodies on the streets; I’ve had a gun held to my head; I even had to drink mosquito-larvae infested water…all because of the wars.  I thought I was living in hell.  Finally, I had had enough and in 1999 I decided to flee the country.  Traveling alone, now a refugee, I eventually made it to the neighboring country of Gabon, where I lived for the next ten years.  Finally in late in 2009, with only $800 in my pocket, I arrived in the United States.  I was instantly overwhelmed with the reality of being alone; a non-English speaking black man from Africa in a capitalistic society was going to be challenging, to say the least. I learned English quickly and was able to complete my GED in 2010.  I then went on to attend the University of Virginia, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in the field of Electrical Engineering, in 2015.  After earning my degree, I moved to New York State where I am currently working as an Electrical Engineer.

December 2016, Roland Nzaou, second from the left, visited underprivileged students in the village of Bambama, Republic of Congo. Left to right: Druche Koumba , Roland Nzaou, Sisi Ndala, and Doril Kibala. Their school is 45 minutes from the village.

Although my journey wasn’t easy, I do recall a lot of people coming to my aide in times of need; some were complete strangers.  My life experiences are what ignited me to give back.  I knew there was no better way to show my gratitude than by providing underprivileged kids in America and Africa with an opportunity to get a proper education.  I believe by showing kids that a brighter future is possible, with support, through education; this will have the greatest impact on them, and thus give them hope and inspire them to pursue their education.  These are the reasons why I decided to create the organization, Educational Synergy to Brighter Future (eSynergy).

eSynergy is an organization that works collectively with volunteers by providing academic opportunities to underprivileged kids in the US and in Africa with hope for a brighter future. Educational Synergy to Brighter Futures uses strategies described in the Services tab.
